The Journey - Six Stages to a Better Life

introduction to juvenate Jun 12, 2026

One of the most common reasons people get stuck isn't that they don't know what they want. It's that they don't understand where they are in the process of getting there.

Change isn't a single event. It's a journey. And like any journey, it has stages. Understanding those stages changes everything, because it means that whatever you're experiencing right now isn't random. It's predictable. And if it's predictable, it's manageable.

After 32 years of clinical practice, I've identified six distinct stages that people move through on the journey from stuck to transformed. Here's what they look like.

Stage 1: The Stuck Place

This is where most people begin. Something isn't working. Life feels smaller than it should. There's a gap between where you are and where you want to be, and no clear idea of how to close it.

The stuck place is uncomfortable, but it's also the most important stage. Because this is where the foundational work happens. Understanding how your mind works, identifying the thinking patterns that are keeping you in place, and building the mental framework you need to move forward. Without this foundation, everything else is built on unstable ground.

Stage 2: Getting Moving

The second stage is where most strategies fall apart. You know what you need to do. You've read the books, made the plans, set the goals. But you're still not moving.

This is the stage of inertia. Of overthinking and over-preparing. Of waiting to feel ready, which, as most people eventually discover, never quite happens. Getting moving is about understanding why starting feels difficult and doing it anyway, before the conditions feel right.

Stage 3: Brave New World

You've started. Things are changing. And it feels deeply uncomfortable.

This is Stage 3, and it catches most people completely off guard. Progress was supposed to feel good. Instead it feels strange and unsettling. Old patterns feel familiar and new ones feel fragile. The people around you may be reacting to your changes in ways you didn't expect.

This stage is where a lot of people quietly retreat. Understanding why it feels this way is what keeps you moving forward.

Stage 4: Continuous Momentum

The initial energy of change has faded. You're no longer powered by the excitement of starting something new. The work of change has become, well, work.

Stage 4 is about building the thinking patterns that sustain progress when motivation runs out. The people who make lasting change aren't the ones who stay motivated forever. They're the ones who build systems that keep them moving even when they don't feel like it.

Stage 5: The Bounce Back

Setbacks happen. To everyone. At every stage of every journey.

What separates the people who reach their goals from the people who don't isn't the absence of setbacks. It's what they do when setbacks occur. Stage 5 is about building genuine resilience, not the motivational poster version but the real capacity to absorb difficulty, learn from it and keep going.

Stage 6: Mastery

This is where the journey completes. Not because there's nothing left to learn, but because better thinking has stopped being something you do and become something you are.

At Stage 6, the tools you've built have become part of how you move through the world. You navigate difficulty from a position of stability. You make decisions with clarity. You understand yourself well enough to keep growing without needing a crisis to prompt you.

This is what transformation actually looks like.

Where are you right now?

Most people reading this will recognise themselves in one of these stages. The good news is that wherever you are, the path forward is clear. Juvenate is built around these six stages, with a course for each one, giving you exactly the right tools at exactly the right moment in your journey.
